TRENTON'S Lady

Trenton's Lady Gabrielle has lustrous fleece and density. She is
1 of 9 female offspring out of 12 registered offspring of her sire,
Trenton de Peru (keep those female genes coming)! The brilliance
in her fleece is amazing and so striking. When you first look at her,
you think she is only white. She may have glistening white locks, but
there's black mascara eyes, nose and toe nails, with fawn beauty
flecks dappled in her face and at the skin. Knowing this, we paired
her for her 1st birth with El Ganador of Peru, a phenomenal maroon
sire from Alpacas America. Guess what? That pairing was just the
ticket. Lady Gabrielle birthed a stunning brown bearded female in
September 2007, whom we named
Ganador's Kiera. The
color theory upon which she was bred proved to be correct. Gabby will
produce darker color when bred to sires of color. She is for sale bred
to GF Bokhara for a September 2008 birth. |

silky, this little lady is blossoming more and more each day. Her
purchase included a free breeding. Stay tuned for more pictures.

- Alpaca Ten Commandments
- by Dan Gromek
-
- 1. Thou shalt not buy
the first alpaca you see.
- 2. Thou shall visit at
least three alpaca breeders before buying an alpaca.
- 3. Thou shalt not purchase
"the perfect alpaca" for it has not yet been born.
- 4. Thou shall obtain
good references from breeder you intend to purchase from.
- 5. Thou shalt not buy
imported alpacas or alpacas at auction, until you understand
the risks.
- 6. Thou shall purchase
full mortality insurance on your alpacas.
- 7. Thou shall focus on
alpaca quality. Name brand hype is short lived.
- 8. Thou shall insure
everything is in writing with extensive warranties and alpacas
are registered.
- 9. Thou shall breed to
the highest quality studs possible, for the future belongs to
the crias.
- 10. Thou shall learn
about alpacas, for knowledge is the road to success.

Alpacas are neat. The
alpaca industry is great.

- Warning! Hype Zone
- by Dan Gromek
-
- As
in other industries, alpacas are promoted in many ways. This
is very important since the vast majority of North Americans
do not know of these wonderful critters. Sometimes we get carried
away with the promotions. The full story is not told or the truth
is bent just a little. The purpose of this article is to give
my opinion on this hype and help new breeders avoid pitfalls
that could stain an otherwise rewarding experience.
- Country
of Origin: This refers to the South American country the
alpaca (or parentage) was imported from. Prior to 1994 this had
some value. Peru was known for quality in white alpacas. Bolivia
and Chili were dominant in colored alpacas. Since 1994 many thousands
of alpacas have crossed the borders between the South American
countries. In recent years alpacas imported from one country
may well have been born in another country. When buying alpacas
today look for quality, not country of origin labels.
- "This
alpaca has perfect conformation.": Physical composition
is extremely important to having healthy quality alpacas. This
is why our show association (A.L.S.A.) judge animals 50% on conformation.
In the years we have been breeders, I have never seen an alpaca
with perfect conformation. Even the national champions
I have seen were not perfect. Today we are presented with the
challenge of perfecting the North American alpaca type. Someday
we may even get close.
- Best
Breeder in the World: There is a breeder in Peru who has
been extensively promoted as being the "best in the world".
It is true that his are among the best quality white alpacas
and his animals have certainly received the best promotion. However,
this herd is probably the most inbreed group of alpacas in the
world. We own a few of these alpacas and are careful to cross
breed them to unrelated males. We want to insure having healthy
vigorous babies.
- After
Sale Support: This is extremely important to breeders in
their early years. How well you are wined and dined before you
buy has no relationship to quality of support after your purchase.
Alpacas breeders are a small informed group. Call our national
association at 970-586-5357 for names and phone numbers of breeders
in your area. Then call around and ask questions. This little
bit of research can pay dividends down the road.
- Blue
Ribbon Winner: We own many blue ribbon winners and it is
a strong indicator of quality and does add value. However, do
not lose focus when you see a blue ribbon. With so few alpacas
in North America it easy for an average quality animal to win
at a small out of the way show. Even at the big shows some of
the best alpacas are pulled out because of fear of losing and
looking bad. Our judges will tell you that at a different time
and place they might place the same alpaca differently. There
are a few who shape their fleeces to make the alpacas conformation
look better. Judges say they see through this but I wonder. Blue
ribbons indicate good things, but prove little unless you know
the rest of the story.
